Why you should try open water swimming
By Reserva Conchal on July 26, 2016
Swimming is one of the most popular activities in the world. If you’re looking to step up and challenge yourself away from the pool then open water swimming is the perfect way to take your swimming in a new direction.
Swimming requires a tranquil and perfectly focused mind. Open water swimming takes a different kind of mental attitude.
Open water swimming has also been shown to significantly combat mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. The body releases huge amounts of endorphins, adrenalin and dopamine both during and after a swim, to help you adapt and overcome the conditions of the water. There is a refreshing and undeniable high that follows each session.
The sea of Playa Conchal is perfect for open water swimming. It has a warm but cool temperature and it is a very calm sea with clear water. That’s why the former swimmer Kurt Niehaus began to promote this sport in the country with the “Aguas Abiertas” organization in 2004.
Their goal is to provide events in safe and amazing locations. They want the participants to have a unique and unforgettable experience. For that reason, the “Open Water Circuit” was created in 2013.
The “Open Water Circuit” is a serie of competitions during the year, which combine incredible scenery. In each competition participants accumulate points for a “general ranking” and by an “age category”.
In addition, the organization has a strategic alliance with Kurt Niehaus Swim Academy to support the development both, new enthusiasts and swimmers that want to improve their performance in this exciting sport.
Nuevo Arenal, Jaco, Playa Conchal, Playa Hermosa Guanacaste and “el Golfo de Papagayo” are some of the places where the competitions take place.
